The Dulwich Almshouse Charity’s most important priority is to ensure that our residents’ accommodation is fit for purpose, suited to the needs of older people and enables them to maintain healthy, independent lives.
The current Almshouse, Edward Alleyn House, is an iconic building situated in the heart of a vibrant community, yet possesses a number of limitations, including the size of the flats and accessibility challenges for those living longer lives and who may be managing emerging health conditions.
Home improvements for Almshouse residents
A planning application to renovate Edward Alleyn House was submitted to Southwark Council in September 2025. This is the culmination of many months of work to find a solution that balances residents’ needs and the heritage aspects of the building. A meeting was held with Almshouse residents to consult on the detailed plans and planning process. If permission is granted, the renovation will improve living standards for residents by enhancing insulation and cooling systems, improving access, upgrading bathroom and kitchen facilities and installing double-glazed windows.
